Background

Oxytocin was discovered by Sir Henry Dale in 1906 when he observed that extracts from the posterior pituitary gland stimulated uterine contraction. Vincent du Vigneaud synthesized oxytocin in 1953, becoming the first polypeptide hormone to be chemically synthesized — an achievement that earned him the 1955 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. It is a cyclic nonapeptide produced primarily in the hypothalamic paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei.
